GlobalData’s latest report, “Global Refinery Vacuum Distillation Units (VDU) Outlook to 2025 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Vacuum Distillation Units,” says that the global vacuum distillation unit capacity increased from 28,168 thousand barrels per day (Mbd) in 2015 to 28,213Mbd in 2020 at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 0.03%. It is expected to increase from 28,213Mbd in 2020 to 30,593Mbd in 2025 at an AAGR of 1.6%.

The US, Russia, Japan, India and Germany are the major countries that accounted for 48.9% of the total global VDU capacity of the world in 2020.

The US had the highest refinery VDU capacity globally in 2020 with 8,533Mbd. Other key countries in this were Russia, Japan, India and Germany with 1,558Mbd, 1,499Mbd, 1,185Mbd and 1,031Mbd, respectively. Russia witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2015-2020, with an AAGR of 2.7% among the key countries, followed by Germany with 1.1%.

Globally, 90 countries have active refineries, with VDUs and a total refinery VDU capacity of 28,213Mbd in 2020. Port Arthur II (US), Pascagoula (US), Jamnagar I (India), Jamnagar II (India) and Baytown (US) are the largest refineries with active VDUs in the world in terms of the refining VDU capacity in 2020.

By 2025, 57 new refineries with VDUs are expected to commence operations globally. Lagos I (Nigeria), Dos Bocas (Mexico), Gulei (China) and Tuban II (Indonesia) are some of the largest upcoming refineries with VDUs in the world during the outlook period 2021-2025.
