Thirty-eight oil and gas discoveries were made in Q3 2019 with Norway leading the international pack, according to a report by GlobalData surveying the quarterly outlook for the global oil and gas sector. 

The report, entitled ‘Q3 2019 Global Oil and Gas Discoveries Review – South America and Europe Dominate with Highest Number of Discoveries in the Quarter’ found that 21 discoveries were in conventional oil and 15 were in conventional gas. Meanwhile, heavy oil and coalbed methane had one discovery each.

Among regions, South America and Europe led with eight discoveries each, followed by Asia and Africa with five each. The Caribbean had four discoveries, while the Middle East and the Former Soviet Union (FSU) had three discoveries each. 

Among countries, Norway had the highest number of discoveries with six in the quarter. Colombia followed with five discoveries, while Egypt, and Trinidad & Tobago, had four each. Guyana and the United Arab Emirates followed with three discoveries each. 

Among operators, Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation led with four discoveries in Q3 2019. Aker BP ASA, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and BHP followed with three discoveries each. Equinor ASA, Oil & Gas Development Company Ltd, and Tullow Oil Plc had two discoveries each.

Of the 38 discoveries for the quarter, onshore terrain accounted for the highest with 22. Shallow water terrain followed with eight, while deepwater and ultra-deepwater accounted for four discoveries each.
