The total length of the global trunk/transmission pipeline network is 2,034,065.0 km (with start years up to 2023), according to GlobalData’s latest report.

Of this total length, crude oil pipelines constitute 379,000.4 km, petroleum products pipelines constitute 267,289.6 km, natural gas pipelines constitute 1,295,563.6 km and NGL pipelines constitute 92,211.8 km.

The findings come from the recently published 704-page report, entitled ‘Global Oil and Gas Pipelines Industry Outlook to 2023 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Pipelines’.

As of September 2019, there were 3,807 active and suspended pipelines with a length of 1,878,726.0 km. By 2023, 507 planned and announced pipelines are expected to start operations with a length 155,340.0 km.

Globally, North America has the highest oil and gas pipelines length of 834,152.5 km (with start years up to 2023), of which, crude oil pipelines constitute 154,200.9 km, petroleum products pipelines constitute 103,106.3 km, natural gas pipelines constitute 495,555.3 km and NGL pipelines constitute 81,290.0 km. The region’s share in the global transmission pipeline length is 41.0 per cent.

By 2023, in North America, a total of 148 planned and announced pipelines are expected to start operations with a length of 42,580.4 km. Keystone XL Project is the longest planned pipeline in the region. It is expected to start operations in 2021 with a length of 1,897.0 km.

The Former Soviet Union (FSU) has the second-highest pipeline length globally (with start years up to 2023), with 415,349.0 km, of which crude oil pipelines constitute 90,502.3 km, petroleum products pipelines constitute 23,913.4 km, natural gas pipelines constitute 298,748.3 km and NGL pipelines constitute 2,185.0 km. The region’s share in the global transmission pipeline length is 20.4 per cent.

By 2023, in FSU, a total of 35 planned and announced pipelines are expected to start operations with a length of 16,772.9 km. Nord Stream 2 is the longest planned pipeline in the region. It is expected to start its operations in 2019 with a length of 2,400.0 km.

Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are the other major regions globally with lengths of 223,645.2 km, 219,932.3 km, and 105,962.4 km, respectively (with start years up to 2023).
