GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Refinery Alkylation Units Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Alkylation Units’, says that the global refinery alkylation units capacity increased from 2,469 thousand barrels per day (mbd) in 2016 to 2,564mbd in 2021 at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 0.8%. It is expected to increase from 2,564mbd in 2021 to 2,825mbd in 2026 at an AAGR of 1.9%
The US, China, Japan, India and South Korea are the major countries that accounted for 68% of the total global alkylation unit capacity in 2021.
The US had the highest refinery alkylation units capacity in 2021 with 1,258mbd. Other key countries in terms of refinery alkylation units capacity were China, Japan, India and South Korea with 182mbd, 112mbd, 105mbd and 86mbd, respectively. China witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2016-2021, with an AAGR of 28.4%, among the countries followed by South Korea, with 1.7%.
Globally, 48 countries had active refineries, with a total refinery alkylation units capacity of 2,564mbd in 2021. Jamnagar II (India), Texas City III (US), Paraguana (Venezuela), Baton Rouge (US) and Baytown (US) were some of the largest active refineries in terms of alkylation units capacity in 2021.
By 2026, upcoming alkylation units are expected to commence operations in 39 refineries globally. Vadinar (India), Pulau Muara Besar (Brunei) and Lagos I (Nigeria) are the major refineries with upcoming alkylation projects globally during the 2022-2026 outlook period.
