Global ammonia capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the upcoming years, potentially increasing from 232.94 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2018 to 282.53 mtpa in 2030 according to a recent GlobalData report.

Around 103 planned and announced plants are slated to come online primarily in Asia and the Middle East.

In Asia, India is planning to start 18 planned and announced ammonia plants, with a total capacity of about 9.27 mtpa, by 2030. The country is expected to spend a capital expenditure (capex) of $9.50bn. Major capacity additions will be from Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers.

In the Middle East, Iran leads with planned and announced capacity additions of about 7.67 mtpa by 2030. The country is expected to spend a total of $5.11bn by 2030. National Petrochemical, Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries and Masjed Soleiman Petrochemical are the top companies accounting for the major capacity additions in Iran.

Africa has 20 planned and announced ammonia plants, of which Nigeria has nine with a total capacity of 6.64 mtpa by 2030. The capex for these plants is $6.50bn by 2030. Major capacity additions will be from Dangote Industries.

In the Former Soviet Union (FSU), the majority of capacity additions are in Russia, with planned and announced capacity additions of about 6.73 mtpa by 2030. Capex for these plants totals $7.34bn by 2030. Oteko is the top company accounting for the major capacity additions in Russia.
