The global chlorine capacity is poised to see moderate growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 87.69 million tons per annum (Mtpa) in 2019 to 92.13Mtpa in 2024, registering total growth of 5%.

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Chlorine Industry Outlook to 2024 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants’ states that around 45 planned and announced projects are slated to come online predominantly in Asia, followed by Europe over the upcoming years.

Among regions, Asia leads with the largest capacity additions for the new-build and expansion of the existing chlorine projects by 2024. For the upcoming new-build projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 2.07Mtpa from 12 planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing chlorine projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.98Mtpa from eight planned and announced projects.

Among the top 10 countries, China leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 1.42Mtpa from six planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from a planned project, Tianjin Bohai Chemical Development Company Tianjin Chlorine Plant, with a capacity of 0.60Mtpa. It is expected to commence production of chlorine in 2020.

India and the US follow next and are expected to contribute about 1.16Mtpa and 0.59Mtpa, from 10 and one planned and announced projects, respectively. The main capacity contribution for India will be from a planned project, GACL-NALCO Alkalies and Chemicals Dahej Chlorine Plant, contributing 0.23Mtpa. It is expected to commence production of chlorine in 2021 while, for the US, the entire capacity contribution will be from the planned project, Shintech Plaquemine Chlorine Plant 2, with the capacity of 0.59Mtpa and expected to come online in 2021.
