GlobalData’s latest report, “Global Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook for Refineries, 2022,” indicates that global crude distillation unit (CDU) capacity is expected to witness a growth of 11.0% over the next four years, potentially increasing from 105.6 million barrels per day (MMbd) in 2022 to 117.2MMbd by 2026.
Asia’s CDU capacity is expected to reach 42.2MMbd in 2026, the highest among all regions globally. North America and Europe follow with 24.4MMbd and 13.3MMbd, respectively.
Among countries, China, India, and Nigeria would be the top three countries globally for CDU capacity additions during the 2022 to 2026 outlook period. China is expected to add 3.4MMbd of CDU capacity by 2026 while India and Nigeria are expected to add 1.6MMbd and 1.5MMbd, respectively.

The Lagos I refinery in Nigeria and the Al-Zour refinery in Kuwait are the top two upcoming refineries globally in terms of CDU capacity from 2022 to 2026. The Lagos I refinery is expected to start operations with a capacity of 650 thousand barrels per day (Mbd), followed by Al-Zour with 615Mbd. Jieyang, Yulong and Coega are in joint third with capacities of 400Mbd each.
