GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Refinery Crude Distillation Units (CDU) Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Crude Distillation Units’, says that the Asia refinery CDU capacity increased from 32,322 thousand barrels of oil per day (mbd) in 2016 to 35,391mbd in 2021, at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 1.8%. It is expected to increase from 35,391mbd in 2021 to 42,264mbd in 2026, at an AAGR of 1.8%.
China, India, Japan, South Korea and Singapore are the key countries in Asia that accounted for 84.3% of the total CDU capacity in 2021.
China had the highest refinery CDU capacity in 2021, with 17,186mbd. Other key countries in terms of refinery CDU capacity were India, Japan, South Korea and Singapore, with 5,039mbd, 3,423mbd, 3,015mbd and 1,189mbd, respectively. China witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2016 to 2021, with an AAGR of 2.8%, among the countries, followed by India with 1.5%.
In Asia, 19 countries had active refineries, with a total refinery CDU capacity of 35,391mbd in 2021. Ulsan, Yeosu, Dayushan Island, Jamnagar II and Jamnagar I were some of the largest active refineries in terms of CDU capacity in 2021.
By 2026, 49 new refinery CDUs are expected to commence operations in Asia. Vadinar (India), Yulong (China), Jieyang (China) and Lianyungang I (China) are the major refineries with upcoming CDU projects in Asia during the 2022-2026 outlook period.
