GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Refinery Hydrotreater Units Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Hydrocracking Units’, says that the Asia refinery hydrotreater units capacity increased from 17,831 thousand barrels of oil per day (mbd) in 2016 to 20,160mbd in 2021 at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 2.5%. It is expected to increase from 20,160mbd in 2021 to 24,047mbd in 2026 at an AAGR of 3.5%.
China, Japan, India, South Korea and Taiwan are the key countries in Asia that accounted for 87.1% of the total hydrotreater units capacity of the region in 2021.
China had the highest refinery hydrotreater units capacity in 2021, with 7,310mbd. Other key countries in terms of refinery hydrotreater units capacity were Japan, India, South Korea and Taiwan, with 4,223mbd, 3,583mbd, 1,770mbd and 666mbd, respectively. India witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2016-2021, with an AAGR of 3.6%, among the countries followed by China, with 3.0%.
In Asia, 17 countries had active refineries with a total hydrotreater units capacity of 20,160mbd in 2021. Ulsan (South Korea), Jamnagar I (India), Dayushan Island (China), Jamnagar II (India) and Jurong Island I (Singapore) were some of the largest active refineries in terms of hydrotreater units capacity in 2021.
By 2026, upcoming hydrotreater units are expected to commence operations in 40 refineries across Asia. Yulong (China), Vadinar (India) and Larkana (Pakistan) are the major refineries with upcoming hydrotreater projects in Asia during the 2022-2026 outlook period.
