Global polyvinyl chloride (PVC) capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next four years, potentially increasing from 60.90 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2023 to 70.97mtpa in 2028. Globally, 28 planned and announced PVC projects are expected to come online by 2028, predominantly in Asia followed by the Middle East.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 4.70mtpa from eight new-build, planned, and announced projects. As for capacity expansions, the region is expected to add a capacity of 1.01mtpa from six planned projects.

Within Asia, the majority of PVC capacity additions are from upcoming projects in India and China, with 2.49mtpa and 2.20mtpa, respectively. The highest capacity addition in India is from a planned project, ‘Reliance Industries Dahej PVC Plant 2′. It is expected to commence operations in 2027 with a capacity of 1.20mtpa. While in China, ‘Wanhua Chemical Fujian Company Fuzhou PVC Plant’ represents the major upcoming project by 2028. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 0.80mtpa of PVC, starting from next year.

In the Middle East, a total capacity addition of 1.31mtpa is anticipated from one planned and three announced projects. ‘Taziz EDC and PVC Ruwais PVC Plant’ in the United Arab Emirates accounts for the highest capacity addition in the region. This announced project is anticipated to come online in 2028, with a capacity of 0.36mtpa. ‘Qatar Vinyl Company Mesaieed PVC Plant’, a planned project in Qatar, represents the next highest capacity addition in the region with 0.35mtpa. It is expected to begin operations next year.
