Asia is projected to lead global acrylonitrile capacity expansion by 2030, driven by robust demand from key industries and strategic investments in production facilities. This growth is expected to be fuelled by the region’s burgeoning automotive, construction, and textile sectors, which rely heavily on acrylonitrile applications.
Asia is expected to add a capacity of 2.70 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from approximately nine new-build, planned projects. The majority of acrylonitrile capacity additions are from upcoming projects in China, expected to be around 2.44mtpa, reflecting its expansive industrial base. The highest capacity addition in the region is from the ‘Zhejiang Petrochemical Daishan Acrylonitrile Plant 2’ in China, which is expected to commence operations this year with a capacity of 0.66mtpa. Zhejiang Petrochemical is the operator of this plant while Zhejiang Rongsheng Holding Group (45.9%) and Tongkun Group (20%) are the major equity holders.
In addition to China, South Korea is expected to experience capacity expansions in Asia by 2030. The capacity addition is from the ‘TL Chemical Ulsan Acrylonitrile Plant’, which is also expected to come online this year with a capacity of 0.26mtpa.
Other than Asia, the Middle East is the only region to witness acrylonitrile capacity additions with 0.73mtpa by 2030. The capacity additions in the region are expected from ‘Ineos Al-Jubail Acrylonitrile Plant’ in Saudi Arabia and ‘Sasa Polyester Sanayi Yumurtalik Acrylonitrile Plant’ in Turkey. They are scheduled to come online in 2027 and 2028 with capacities of 0.43mtpa and 0.30mtpa, respectively.
