Global purified terephthalic acid (PTA) capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 117.86 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2022 to 171.16mtpa in 2027, registering total growth of 45%. Around 32 planned and announced PTA projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia, followed by the Middle East over the upcoming years.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 47.40mtpa from 22 new-build planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing PTA projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.15mtpa from one planned project. Within Asia, China leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 35.80mtpa from 16 planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from two planned projects, Fujian Fuhaichuang Petrochemical Zhangzhou PTA Plant, and Guangxi Tongkun Petrochemical Qinzhou PTA Plant, each with a capacity of 3mtpa. Both are expected to commence production of PTA in 2025.

The Middle East follows next with a capacity of 4mtpa from three new-build planned projects whereas there is no expansion in the region. Sasa Polyester Sanayi Adana PTA Plant in Turkey leads with a capacity of 1.50mtpa and is expected to come online in 2023.
