Global ethylene oxide capacity is poised to see considerable growth up to 2028, potentially increasing from 42.85mtpa (million tonnes per annum) in 2023 to 50.47mtpa. Globally, 28 planned and announced ethylene oxide projects are expected to come online by 2028, predominantly in Asia followed by the Middle East.
Asia is expected to add a capacity of 5.79mtpa from 14 new-build, planned and announced projects. As for capacity expansions, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.07mtpa from one planned project.

Within Asia, the majority of ethylene oxide capacity additions are from upcoming projects in China, with a capacity of 5.43mtpa. The highest capacity addition is from a planned project, the Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou ethylene oxide plant 1. This will commence operations in 2024 with a capacity of 0.73mtpa. The remaining capacity additions of the region are in Indonesia and India, with a total of 0.36mtpa and 0.07mtpa respectively.
In the Middle East, a total capacity addition of 1.22mtpa is anticipated from five planned projects in Iran. The Bushehr Petrochemical Company Assaluyeh ethylene oxide plant accounts for the highest capacity addition with a capacity of 0.40mtpa. The plant is currently under construction and will come online in 2025. The Badr-e-shargh Petrochemical Chabahar ethylene oxide plant and the Ibne Sina Petrochemical Company Andimeshk ethylene oxide plant represent other significant capacity additions in the region with 0.36mtpa and 0.30mtpa respectively.
