Global butadiene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 17.12Mtpa in 2020 to 21.86Mtpa in 2025, registering total growth of 28%.

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Butadiene Industry Outlook to 2025 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants,’ states that around 38 planned and announced plants are slated to come online primarily in Asia and the Middle East.

Within Asia, India has eight planned and announced Butadiene capacity additions, with a total capacity of about 1.68Mtpa by 2025. The country is expected to spend a capital expenditure (CapEx) of US$0.40 billion. Major capacity additions will be from the Reliance Industries Jamnagar Butadiene Plant.

In the Middle East, Iran has two planned projects with capacity additions of about 0.29Mtpa by 2023 and 2024. The country is expected to spend a total of $0.28bn by 2025. Kian Petrochemical Company Assaluyeh Butadiene Plant and Sepehr Makran Chabahar Butadiene Plant are the major plants for accounting for the capacity additions in Iran.

Reliance Industries Ltd, Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd and Lotte Chemical Corp will be the top three companies globally in terms of planned and announced capacity additions over the upcoming years.
