The largest active refineries of Africa are Skikda I (Algeria), Ras Lanuf (Libya), Port Harcourt I (Nigeria), Mohammedia (Morocco), and Durban II (South Africa) with capacities of 355 thousand barrels of oil per day mbd, 220 mbd, 210 mbd, 200 mbd, and 180 mbd, respectively.

The refining capacity in Africa increased from 3,590 mbd in 2015 to 3,728 mbd in 2020 at an AAGR of 0.8 percent. It is expected to increase from 3,728 mbd in 2020 to 5,766 mbd in 2024 at an AAGR of 10.9%.

In terms of growth outlook of key refinery units, crude distillation unit capacity in Africa is expected to increase from 3,500 mbd in 2020 to 5,284 mbd in 2024 at an AAGR of 8.2%.

Hydrocracking unit capacity in Africa increased from 146 mbd in 2015 to 187 mbd in 2020 at an AAGR of 5%. It is expected to increase from 187 mbd in 2020 to 661 mbd in 2024 at an AAGR of 25.3%.
