GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Refinery Crude Distillation Units (CDU) Outlook to 2025 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Crude Distillation Units,’ says that the global crude distillation unit capacity increased from 99,284 thousand barrels per day (Mbd) in 2015 to 103,067Mbd in 2020 at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 0.7%. It is expected to increase from 103,067Mbd in 2020 to 114,416Mbd in 2025 at an AAGR of 2.1%.

The United States, China, Russia, India and Japan are the major countries that accounted for 47.2% of the total global CDU capacity of the world in 2020.

The US had the highest refinery CDU capacity globally in 2020 with 18,555Mbd. Other key countries in terms of refinery CDU capacity were China, Russia, India and Japan with 17,166Mbd, 6,600Mbd, 5,029Mbd and 3,423Mbd, respectively. China witnessed the highest capacity growth from 2015 to 2020 with an AAGR of 3.1% among the key countries, followed by India and Russia with 1.5% and 1.2%, respectively.

Globally, 117 countries have active refineries with CDUs and a total refinery CDU capacity of 103,067Mbd in 2020. Paraguana (Venezuela), Ulsan (South Korea), Yeosu (South Korea), Jamnagar II (India) and Jamnagar I (India) are the largest refineries with active CDUs in the world in terms of the refining CDU capacity in 2020.

By 2025, 134 new refineries with CDUs are expected to commence operations globally. Lagos I (Nigeria), Al-Zour (Kuwait), Yulong (China) and Vadinar (India) are some of the largest upcoming refineries with CDUs in the world during the outlook period 2021 to 2025.
