Russia’s Sakhalin Energy has commenced the annual maintenance of the Piltun-Astokhskaya-B (PA-B) offshore platform.

The PA-B platform, the largest oil and gas production platform of the Sakhalin-2 project, will remain closed during the month-long maintenance campaign.

Maintenance works will include an annual purging of the hydrocarbon multiphase flow separation vessels, renovation of the produced water filters and other upkeeping works.

It will also include the maintenance of two gas compressors, including an assessment of a gearbox in one of them.

Around 250 people are expected to participate in the campaign.

Sakhalin Energy offshore assets manager Marat Rezyapov said: “Sakhalin Energy conducts its annual turnarounds to carry out preventive and routine maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of equipment along with some unique, technically challenging operations.

“Directly after their completion, the company will proceed with the scheduled shutdown of the facilities in the integrated gas chain, the LUN-A platform being one of them. Sakhalin Energy is primarily involved with the development of the Piltun-Astokhskoye oil field and the Lunskoye gas field off the north-eastern coast of Sakhalin.

Gazprom, Royal Dutch Shell, Mitsui and Mitsubishi are the stakeholders of the company.

The PA-B platform is located around 12km offshore the north-eastern coast of Sakhalin Island. It has been extracting oil and associated gas from the Piltun reservoir of the Piltun-Astokhskoye oil field since 2008.

The platform has a production capacity of around 70,000 barrels per day.
