HydraWell has secured a multi-year contract from PSE Kinsale Energy, a unit of Malaysia’s Petronas, to support a major decommissioning project in Ireland.
PSE Kinsale Energy intends to decommission the Kinsale Area gas fields located in the Celtic Sea, approximately 40km to 70km off the south coast of County Cork.
Developed between 1978 and 2003, the fields include Kinsale Head, Ballycotton, South-West Kinsale and Seven Heads gas fields.
As part of the two-year campaign, HydraWell will implement perforate, wash and cement (PWC) system solution on about 15 wells across Kinsale Energy’s Celtic Sea assets.
Designed for specialist wellbore applications, the PWC system can replace traditional Plug & Abandonment (P&A) and downhole tooling techniques.
HydraWell UK operations manager Calum Smith said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract by PSE Kinsale Energy and to be working with AGR Well Management as the lead contractor, which will allow us to continue supporting their substantial P&A requirements in the completion of this major decommissioning project.

By GlobalData“PWC technology has the potential to slash the operational sequence by up to six days when compared to the conventional section milling alternative. The increased efficiency benefits help to reduce environmental impact as well as the potential to reduce operating costs by up to millions of pounds.”
In December 2020, Kinsale Energy deployed HydraWell’s PWC technology on a well and achieved success.
As a result, the firm intends to implement the solution on up to 75% of the remaining P&A activities.
HydraWell CEO Mark Sørheim said: “By harnessing PWC technology, we are working to lower the risk of long-term environmental damage to continue our commitment to transform well operations around the world.”
