GlobalData’s latest report, ‘LNG Liquefaction Industry Outlook in North America to 2024 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Liquefaction Terminals’ says that the liquefaction capacity in North America increased from 1.5 mtpa in 2014 to 49.0 mtpa in 2019 at an AAGR of 69.2%. It expects an increase in the region’s capacity from 49.0 mtpa in 2019 to 205.1 mtpa in 2024 at an AAGR of 28.7%.

North America accounted for 11.2% of the global liquefaction capacity with 49.0 mtpa in 2019. Out of the total capacity in North America, the US accounted for 99.4% of the region’s capacity with 48.7 mtpa in 2019. The remainder of 0.3 mtpa of the capacity is from Canada.

The US and Canada are the only countries in North America with active liquefied natural gas (LNG) liquefaction terminals. Sabine Pass II, Corpus Christi I, and Cove Point II, all in the US, are the major active liquefaction terminals in North America with capacities of 22.5 mtpa, 9.0 mtpa, and 5.3 mtpa respectively.

Between 2020 and 2024, 15 newbuild (planned and announced) liquefaction terminals are expected to start operations in North America. The total capacity of these terminals is expected to be 125.5 mtpa. The US accounts for most of the capacity additions in the region with 114.6 mtpa during the outlook period.
