The global polyethylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 114.43 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) in 2019 to 173.55Mtpa in 2024, registering total growth of 52%.

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Polyethylene Industry Outlook to 2024 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants’ states that around 154 planned and announced projects are slated to come online predominantly in Asia, followed by the Middle East over the upcoming years.

Among regions, Asia leads with the largest capacity additions for the upcoming and expansion of the existing e projects by 2024. For the upcoming new-build projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 23.48Mtpa from 56 planned and announced projects, whereas, for the expansion of the existing projects, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.68Mtpa from five planned and announced projects.

Among the top 10 countries, the US leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 10.55Mtpa from 17 planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from announced projects, the Chevron Phillips Chemical Qatar Petroleum joint venture (JV) Orange Polyethylene Plant 1 and the Chevron Phillips Chemical Qatar Petroleum JV Orange Polyethylene Plant 2, each with the capacity of 1Mtpa. It is expected to commence production by 2024.

China and Russia follow next and are expected to contribute about 9.64Mtpa and 9.35Mtpa, from 28 and 21 planned and announced projects, respectively. The main capacity contribution for China will be from a planned project, Tangshan Xu Yang Petrochemical Tangshan Polyethylene Plant 1, contributing 0.50Mtpa. It is expected to commence production by 2024 while, for Russia, the main capacity contribution will be from the announced project, Amur GCC Blagoveshchensk Polyethylene Plant 2, with the capacity of 0.80Mtpa and expected to come online by 2024.

Among companies, Sibur Holding lead with the largest capacity additions from planned and announced projects by 2024, with estimated capacity additions of 3.8Mtpa from eight planned and announced projects.
