The global Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) capacity is poised to see moderate growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 4.78 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2018 to 5.67mtpa in 2023, registering a total growth of 19%.

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Industry Outlook to 2023 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants’ states that around eight planned and announced plants are slated to come online only in Asia by 2023.

Asia is the only region with the capacity additions for the upcoming MMA plants by 2023. For the upcoming new-build plants, the region is expected to add a capacity of 0.76mtpa from eight planned and announced plants, and it can be seen that there will be no expansion of the existing MMA plants by 2023.

Among the countries, China leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 0.56mtpa from six planned and announced plants. The major capacity additions will be from the plants, ‘Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical Company Zibo Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Plant’ and ‘Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical Quanzhou Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Plant’, which is expected to come onstream by 2023.

Malaysia and India are the only other countries with MMA capacity of 0.15mtpa and 0.05mtpa respectively by 2023. The entire capacity additions for Malaysia and India will be from a planned and announced plants, ‘PETRONAS Pengerang Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Plant’ and ‘Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals Dahej Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Plant’, respectively.

Among companies, Zibo Qixiang Petrochemical Industry Group Co Ltd had the largest capacity additions from planned and announced MMA plants by 2023, with estimated capacity additions of 0.20mtpa from a planned plant.
