Aquarius Marine Coatings (AMC) has launched its new anti-foul coating solution, Coppercoat-Commercial, for the offshore oil and gas sector.
Containing high levels of copper, Coppercoat-Commercial is a natural anti-microbial agent that protects sub-sea infrastructure from hosting layers of plant, animal and microbe growth.
The coating, which meets the environmental and safety standards, helps reduce maintenance costs and ensures that underwater infrastructure meets performance levels as expected.
The water-based anti-foul coating is free from volatile organic compounds, and according to AMC provides protection against degradation forms which were not prevented by standard anti-corrosion and anti-erosion products.
Prior to the launch, UK’s Plymouth Marine Labs (PML) performed a five-year trial of the new solution. The trial, which was funded by EDF Energy, concluded that Coppercoat-Commercial is the most suitable anti-foul solution for underwater turbines.
Further research by Dr Tom Vance at PML demonstrated that Coppercoat-Commercial is also an effective anti-foul in terms of longevity and noted that the coating just lost 4.3% during the trial period.

By GlobalDataThe Coppercoat-Commercial has been launched for the offshore oil and gas sector as the operators and oilfield services providers are seeking to explore opportunities in deep waters where lifting, cleaning and replacing subsea assets has become a complex process.
Jayson Kenny of AMC said: “We developed Coppercoat for the marine industry 30 years ago. Since then, we have perfected our products and gained plenty of first-hand experience of what happens to vessel’s hulls, and sub-sea equipment when left unprotected.
“Even after just two years in benign harbour waters, there can be up to 25cm of growth that becomes home to an entire ecosystem of marine life, all facilitated by microbial action. Apply that principle to a 1,000t floating platform, with 100m² of surface area in far deeper waters and within a few months that platform will weigh 1,200t with a surface areas closer to 200m² because of foul.
“That creates serious drag, and strains tethers and anchorage points. A heavier and clogged-up asset soon becomes a major problem for maintenance, transportation and logistics teams.”
