A total of 54 crude and natural gas projects are expected to start operations in six countries in Southeast Asia during 2019–2025, according to GlobalData’s latest report.

Among the crude and natural gas operations, 25 represent the number of planned projects with identified development plans and 29 represent the number of early-stage announced projects that are undergoing conceptual studies and that are expected to get approved for development.

Key projects in Southeast Asia are expected to contribute about 223 thousand barrels of oil per day (mbd) of global crude production and about 8.1 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) of global gas production in 2025.

Indonesia and Malaysia will contribute around 80% of the region’s total crude production in 2025. Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar collectively account for rest of the crude and condensate production.

Indonesia also leads in terms of natural gas production in Southeast Asia with 3.1 bcfd in 2025. The other countries in the region – Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand – are expected to contribute the remaining 62% in 2025.

Among companies, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) will lead with the highest crude production of 63 mbd in 2025. Chevron, PTT Public Co, Shell and Mitsui & Co are some of the other key players which are expected to collectively contribute about 59.5 mbd of crude oil in 2025.

As for natural gas production, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), Petrovietnam and PT Pertamina lead among the state-owned companies, collectively contributing about 1.8 bcfd of natural gas in 2025.

Shell Plc, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and Total SA are the supermajors among the key companies and are expected to collectively produce about 2 bcfd of natural gas in 2025.
