The UK government has called for evidence seeking views from industry stakeholders to bolster the country’s position as a global hub for offshore oil and gas decommissioning.

The consultation primarily seeks guidance to improve capabilities of the decommissioning industry and potential ways to enhance its ability to serve the UK market. It also calls for recommendations to support MER UK and reduce the overall costs of decommissioning.

Additionally, it encompasses exploring different avenues to encourage export of domestic decommissioning expertise to other countries.

The government is seeking responses from various trade associations; research and technology organisations, the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA), established MER UK taskforces and academia.

The initiative is expected to help the government, industry and the OGA to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the UK decommissioning industry, and help to devise strategic and coordinated approaches to ensure supply chain benefits.

In January 2018, government watchdog National Audit Office (NAO) published a report stating that decommissioning of the UK’s oil and gas platforms could cost the government up to £24bn.

Decommissioning affects government revenues as the oil and gas operators can recover a part of their costs through tax reliefs.
