Italian oil services firm Saipem’s servers in the Middle East have been affected after an alleged cyber attack from India.

Saipem digital and innovation head Mauro Piasere told Reuters that the attack had originated from Chennai, India.

Piasere stated that the attack affected servers in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait, as well as Scotland, according to Bloomberg.

Citing an unnamed Saipem spokesperson, Bloomberg reported that 400 servers were hit as a result of the cyber attack.

“We are collecting all the elements useful for assessing the impact on our infrastructures and the actions to be taken to restore normal activities.”

Piasere added that the company’s servers in its main operating centres in Italy, France and Britain were not affected.

He said: “The servers involved have been shut down for the time being to assess the scale of the attack. There has been no loss of data because all our systems have back-ups.”

Saipem offers drilling services, as well as engineering, procurement, construction and installation of pipelines and complex projects in the oil and gas market.

The company’s biggest client is Saudi Arabian petroleum and natural gas firm Saudi Aramco.

In October, Saipem secured an onshore engineering and construction contract for the expansion of the Sriracha refinery in Thailand. The $4bn contract was secured in a consortium with Petrofac and Samsung.
