The Government of Brazil has awarded multiple offshore blocks to major global oil and gas companies in the latest auction for exploitation of the country’s reserves.
Some of the companies that won bids for the blocks include Shell, ExxonMobil, Petrobras, Statoil and Qatar Petroleum.
Shell, through its Brazilian subsidiary, Shell Brasil Petroleo, has won four additional deep-water exploration blocks in the Campos and Potiguar basins, one of which was solely awarded to the company.
The remaining three blocks were secured in partnership with Chevron Brazil, Petrobras and Petrogal Brasil.
Shell upstream director Andy Brown said: “We continue to demonstrate our commitment to growing our production in Brazil and our strong belief in the value deep-water resources brings to our global portfolio.
“This bid round offers significant potential for additional deep-water discoveries. These lease commitments fall within our agreed capital ceiling and are consistent with our value-based approach.”

By GlobalDataDuring the auction, which is Brazil’s 15th bid round, ExxonMobil has been awarded eight additional exploration blocks, adding about 640,000 net acres to its portfolio.
The company will operate six of the eight newly awarded blocks and has increased its total position in the country to more than two million net acres through the bid.
It will operate two blocks in the Santos area, which were secured in collaboration with Qatar Petroleum.
ExxonMobil won four blocks in the Campos area, two of which it will operate with partners Petrobras and Qatar Petroleum.
Another two blocks were awarded in the Campos area, which will be operated by Petrobras with partners ExxonMobil and Statoil.
The company will assume operatorship of the remaining two blocks situated in the Sergipe-Alagoas area with partners Queiroz Galvão Exploração e Produção (QGEP) and Murphy Oil.
In total, Statoil won exploration rights over four offshore blocks during the bid.
The company has been awarded two blocks in an alliance with BP.
