Ecopetrol affiliate Ecopetrol America has announced that it has encountered oil and gas pay at Parmer prospect #1, located in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

Located on Green Canyon 867, the prospect featuring Parmer leases GC 823 and GC 867 has been drilled to a depth of 18,900ft at a water depth of approximately 4,200ft.

The two Parmer leases each cover an area of 5,760 acres and are located approximately 143 miles (230km) from Louisiana, US.

Drilling allowed for several pressure readings and the collection of several fluid samples from Miocene sands.

The data indicate a column of approximately 240ft of net condensate-rich gas pay, as prospect as one of 40ft of net oil pay.

Ecopetrol America has a 30% interest in the Parmer Prospect, while its partners Stone Energy and Apache own the remaining stake in the prospect.

This is Ecopetrol’s second deepwater discovery in the Gulf of Mexico.

Apache is the operator of the prospect, where the company will reprocess 3D seismic data over the next few months.

The reprocessing will determine a comprehensive delimitation and development plan.

This is Ecopetrol’s second deepwater discovery in the Gulf of Mexico, one of the regions with the highest oil hydrocarbon potential in the world.

The Parmer discovery results will help the company to attain a production level of 1 million clean barrels of oil equivalent a day by 2015, and 1.3 million clean barrels by 2020, in line with its development strategy.
