Woodside Energy‘s Pluto Train 2 LNG project has reached a milestone with the arrival of the last modules necessary for the expansion of the Pluto LNG facility.

This marks a pivotal step towards the commencement of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production in 2026.

Since February 2024, the project has seen the delivery of 51 modules, with a combined weight of 56,000 tonnes (t), from Batam, Indonesia to Karratha, Western Australia.

The new train is expected to process approximately five million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG.

Additionally, the facility will feature new domestic gas infrastructure, capable of supplying up to 225 terajoules per day to the local market.

The engineering, procurement, and construction activities for Pluto Train 2, led by Bechtel, began in August 2022.

Woodside executive vice president and chief operating officer Australia Liz Westcott said: “The scale of what has been delivered is an incredible achievement and reflects the team’s commitment and professionalism.

“The Scarborough Energy project has made significant progress across multiple work fronts and is now over three-quarters complete. The Woodside and Bechtel teams will now focus on executing the module integration and commissioning of the facility in preparation for the targeted first Scarborough LNG cargo in 2026.”

The inclusion of a second LNG processing train at the Pluto LNG facility is a strategic expansion to efficiently manage the gas produced from the Scarborough offshore field.

Bechtel Energy President Paul Marsden said: “The remarkable success of the module programme exemplifies the robust relationship forged between Woodside and Bechtel on the Pluto Train 2 project.”

The Scarborough Energy project is set to make a substantial economic impact, with projections of more than A$50bn ($31bn) in direct and indirect tax contributions to the Australian economy.

Furthermore, the project is anticipated to generate more than 3,000 jobs during its construction phase and maintain or create an average of almost 600 jobs during its operational lifespan.
