Oil India (OIL) has teamed up with French energy giant TotalEnergies to tackle methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.
In a move aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability, the two energy giants signed a cooperation agreement focusing on the detection and measurement of methane emissions across OIL’s operational sites in India.

Leveraging TotalEnergies’ advanced AUSEA technology, the partnership aims to drive a new level of precision in emissions monitoring.
The AUSEA system, which utilises a drone-mounted gas analyser with dual sensors, is designed to detect methane and carbon dioxide emissions.
It can also pinpoint the exact source of the emissions, providing OIL with actionable insights to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance operational efficiency.
This initiative aligns with OIL’s commitment to environmental responsibility and its recent membership in the Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Charter (OGDC), a global industry alliance launched at COP28.

By GlobalDataCo-chaired by TotalEnergies’ CEO, the OGDC focuses on achieving net-zero operations by 2050, with near-term targets to reduce upstream methane emissions and eliminate routine flaring by 2030.
As part of the agreement, TotalEnergies is making the AUSEA technology available to other OGDC signatories.
TotalEnergies chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanne said: “We are delighted that OIL has joined the growing list of national companies we are collaborating with by making our AUSEA technology available.
“This is a clear demonstration that the Oil & Gas Decarbonisation Charter launched at COP28 has gained momentum, thanks to the promotion of industrial best practices.
“Today, AUSEA performs campaigns on every continent and contributes to the OGDC signatories’ ambition to aim at near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.”
