McDermott International and its partners Chiyoda International and Zachry have announced that Train 1 of the Freeport LNG Liquefaction project has reached the final commissioning stage.
This includes the introduction of feed gas into Train 1 of the natural gas liquefaction and LNG export facility on Quintana Island in Freeport, Texas, US. The first gas marks the transition from construction to startup.
The LNG facility is expected to significantly improve energy export capabilities in the US.
The joint venture (JV) will provide a nominal export capacity of approximately 13.9Mmtpa of LNG, which is equivalent to approximately 2.0bcf/d of pipeline-quality natural gas (feed gas).
McDermott North, Central and South America senior vice-president Mark Coscio said: “First of its kind in the US, with the largest electric motor-driven refrigeration compressors, the Freeport LNG facility will significantly improve the energy export capabilities we have in the US, and McDermott is pleased to be part of its development from the ground up.
“Once Train 1 is fully operational, it will have the capacity to produce more than five million tonnes of LNG per year.”

By GlobalDataProject JV lead Zachry engaged McDermott for the pre-FEED in 2011, followed by front-end engineering and design (FEED) works to support the early development stage of the project.
Chiyoda joined the partnership later and the joint team provided engineering, procurement and facility construction. The collaboration also supplied commissioning and initial operations for the project.
The liquefaction project comprises three pre-treatment trains, a liquefaction facility with three trains, and a second loading berth. A 165,000m³ full containment LNG storage tank is also part of the project.
The proposed expansion requires nearly $14bn in direct investment and is expected to employ more than 3,500 workers during the construction phase.
