An offshore explosion at Fieldwood Energy’s Echo platform in the Gulf of Mexico has killed one person and injured others.
The US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is investigating the incident, which occurred during routine maintenance operations on the platform at about 3pm on 20 November.
Employees of the Turnkey Cleaning Services were cleaning a heater treater, equipment that separates oil from water and other liquids.
The platform had been closed for more than a week and there were no wells producing at the time of the incident.
Fieldwood Energy said: "The explosion that was mentioned in the initial reports was not a well explosion or well blowout. Instead, it was an isolated pressure event that occurred inside the heater treater and did not result in a fire on the platform.
"There was no oil spill or pollution that resulted from this incident and it was contained immediately after it occurred, with no damage to the environment, the platform, or the platform’s wells."
