Kosmos Energy has made a significant gas discovery at block C-8, offshore Mauritania.
According to the company, the Marsouin-1 exploration well, located in the northern part of the block. has made the play-extending discovery.
Preliminary analysis of drilling and wireline logging results revealed that the well encountered at least 70m of net gas pay in Upper and Lower Cenomanian intervals, consisting of quality reservoir sands.
Marsouin-1 is located about 60km north of the basin-opening Tortue-1 gas discovery and was drilled in nearly 2,400m of water using the Atwood Achiever drillship.
Kosmos Energy chairman and CEO Andrew Inglis said: "Marsouin-1 is our second major discovery of 2015, extending our 100% success rate in the outboard Cretaceous petroleum system offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
"Well-to-seismic calibration has significantly de-risked the discovered resource base, as well as future prospects in the basin."

By GlobalDataUsing the well results, the company will be able to predict the oil and gas potential of the emerging, large-scale petroleum system.
Proceeding to the Ahmeyim-2 location in the southern part of Mauritania’s Block C-8, the drillship will now drill the well’s top-hole section.
It will later sail to Senegal where it will spud Guembeul-1 well to delineate the Greater Tortue area, before the end of this year.
