Sempra Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a subsidiary of Pemex to cooperate and coordinate in the development of a natural gas liquefaction project in Mexico.

The MOU was signed by Sempra Energy’s IEnova and Sempra LNG units with a subsidiary of Pemex.

Under the MOU the parties will explore Pemex’s participation in the potential Energía Costa Azul liquefaction project.

"This is an important first step in working with PEMEX on the development of liquefaction facilities at Energía Costa Azul."

It also includes joint efforts on the development and structuring agreements that would enable Pemex to become a customer, natural gas supplier and investor.

The project is located at the site of the Energía Costa Azul receipt terminal in Ensenada, Mexico.

Sempra Energy president Mark Snell said: "This is an important first step in working with PEMEX on the development of liquefaction facilities at Energía Costa Azul.

Energía Costa Azul became the first LNG receipt terminal operating on the west coast of North America after its completion in 2008.

The terminal has the capacity to process about 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.

In November 2014, IEnova won the Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) tender to build and operate a 205km natural gas pipeline in Mexico.

The 42-inch diameter pipeline, which is expected to cost $300m, will run from Ojinaga to El Encino in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
