Energy World’s subsidiary Fourchon LNG has commenced the permitting process with the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a proposed $888m five million tonnes per annum liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export facility at Port Fourchon.

Fourchon LNG filed its formal letter to request initiation of the prefiling review process with the FERC.  

Once the pre-filing review process is completed, work related to the construction of the facility is expected to begin.

During the first phase of the LNG project, the annual production meant for export is estimated to be two million tonnes, while the capacity will be enhanced to five million tonnes in the second phase.

Greater Lafourche Port Commission (GLPC) executive director Chett Chiasson said: “We are looking forward to working with Energy World and our community to move forward through the regulatory process and keep Port Fourchon at the forefront of the oil and gas service industry.”

Fourchon is also planning to reserve up to half a million tonnes of LNG per annum for domestic use, in an attempt to fuel the next generation of offshore supply vessels (OSVs) operating in the Gulf of Mexico.

The facility is set to be constructed to the west of Belle Pass on a site of up to 150 acres.

GLPC and Energy World are currently engaged in preparing the waterway suitability assessment process for the project.

Energy World International managing director Stewart Elliott said: “We look forward to incorporating the LNG produced at Port Fourchon into our global supply chain to fuel our own gas-fired power plants right across the Asia-Pacific region as well as providing a clean, green source of fuel for the next generation of US marine vessels.”

According to the company, LNG from the facility will be exported to the Caribbean, including Jamaica.
