Energy industry consulting and engineering services provider Wood has secured an engineering services contract from Saudi Aramco for the Southern and Northern Areas gas increments project in Saudi Arabia.

The project is expected to require one million engineering hours and is part of the country’s objective to enhance natural gas production capacities.

Under the contract, Wood will offer project management consultancy services including pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) and FEED engineering for gas facilities in Eastern Saudi Arabia, covering large-scale onshore gas production and processing sites.

Additionally, Wood will extend support for engineering, procurement and construction contracting in the forthcoming phases of the project.

Wood executive president of projects Craig Shanaghey said: “Natural gas is a key transition fuel that can have an immediate positive impact on the carbon emissions associated with energy production. Building on our 30-year relationship with Aramco, we are delighted to support this significant expansion project. The Southern and Northern Areas gas increments will meet growing energy and efficiency demands across the globe.

“Our specialist engineering and project delivery teams thrive in solving large-scale and complex challenges. We look forward to applying our global capability to deliver this world-scale project”.

The seven-year project is set to create more than 400 jobs for Wood staff at its peak, predominantly based in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

In September, Saipem secured a $2bn (SR7.51bn) contract from Saudi Aramco for the development of the Marjan oil and gas field.

This offshore contract formed part of a long-term agreement and followed the completion of a competitive bidding process.

Further bolstering Saudi Aramco’s gas expansion strategy, the company awarded contracts exceeding $25bn in July 2024 to drive a 60% increase in gas production by 2030 compared with 2021 levels.

These contracts include a $12.4bn investment for the second-phase development of the Jafurah field, the third-phase expansion of Aramco’s Master Gas System, and the procurement of new gas drilling rigs and maintenance services.
