Mubadala Energy has announced a gas discovery at the Tangkulo-1 well in the South Andaman region offshore North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Drilled to a depth of 3,400m in 1,200m of water, the Tangkulo-1 well encountered an 80m gas column within an Oligocene sandstone reservoir.
Mubadala Energy holds an 80% working interest in the South Andaman Gross Split production sharing contract. Harbour Energy, with a 20% interest, is Mubadala’s partner in the South Andaman licence.
This follows the gas find at the Layaran-1 well in December 2023.
Abu Dhabi-headquartered Mubadala Energy said that with the potential for more than two trillion cubic feet of gas-in-place, this back-to-back discovery establishes South Andaman as one of the most significant gas plays globally.
The discovery was substantiated by a data collection campaign, which included a full 72m core, wireline logging, sidewall core, pressure and fluid sampling.

By GlobalDataA new drill stem test design was utilised at the Tangkulo-1 well, yielding a flow of 47 million standard cubic feet per day (mscf/d) of gas and 1,300 barrels (bbl) of condensate.
The well’s estimated capacity stands at 80–100mscf/d and over 2,000bbl of condensate per day.
The company plans to continue its exploration and appraisal activities to further assess the potential of the region.
Mubadala Energy CEO Mansoor Mohammed Al Hamed said: “When added to our recent success at Layaran-1, this game-changing discovery promises to transform Indonesia’s and South East Asia’s energy landscape and demonstrates that South Andaman is one of the world’s most exciting energy plays.
“By working with partners and harnessing our world-class technical capabilities, I am confident we can realise the full potential of this block, in line with our commitment to support the government’s ambitious development time frames. This news also strengthens our ability to play a proactive role in the energy transition through our gas-biased strategy.”
