The Cypre offshore gas field is proposed to be developed by BP Trinidad and Tobago (BPTT), within the East Mayaro Block, Trinidad, at a water depth of 80m. BPTT is a consortium of BP (70%) and Repsol (30%).

The project is situated about 78km off the south-east coast of Trinidad. BPTT made a decision to go ahead with the project development in September 2022.

Drilling activities at the Cypre gas project are expected to begin in 2023, followed by offshore installation in 2024. Production from the field is anticipated to start in 2025 and will range between 250 and 300 million metric standard cubic feet a day of gas.

Cypre is BPTT’s third subsea field development after the Juniper field and the Matapal field. The project will support BTPP in fulfilling its gas supply commitments.

Cypre discovery and reservoir details

The project will develop the Macadamia offshore gas discovery made in 2017. The Macadamia exploration well drilling campaign tested exploration and appraisal segments below the SEQB discovery.

The discovery well encountered hydrocarbon reservoirs in seven intervals, containing net pay of approximately 600ft.

Cypre gas field development details

The Cypre field is planned as a subsea development utilising the existing infrastructure at the Juniper platform, enabling a faster supply of gas to the market as compared to a normally uncrewed installation (NUI) development.

The project will be developed as a two-phase liquefied natural gas (LNG) tie-back to the Juniper platform.

The development will include seven wells and subsea trees, which will be tied back to the Juniper platform via a four-slot manifold and two new 14km flexible flowlines.

The two new flexible flowlines with larger diameter lines are planned to be installed after decommissioning two existing flexible risers from depleted wells.

The project will receive power from Juniper, avoiding the need for creating new power generation infrastructure and reducing carbon emissions.

The initial front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase has been completed and the project has entered the full engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) phase.

Juniper platform details

Juniper, an offshore platform, is operated by BPTT and is located at a water depth of about 110m, 80km off the south-east coast of Trinidad.

The platform was installed by Thialf, a construction vessel operated by Heerema Marine Contractors.

Production from Juniper began in August 2017. The platform produces gas from the Corallita and Lantana fields.

Contractors involved

Offshore engineering solutions provider Aquaterra Energy was contracted to supply a subsea riser system for the Cypre gas project in May 2023. The subsea riser system will be operated from a jack-up rig.

The contractual scope includes the supply of equipment, including those for rig modifications, and personnel.

Subsea Integration Alliance, an alliance between Subsea7 and OneSubsea, was awarded an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contract for the Cypre project in November 2022. Subsea Integration Alliance will provide EPCI of subsea production systems and subsea pipelines under the contract.

OneSubsea, a subsidiary of technology company SLB, is responsible to provide seven subsea tree systems, subsea controls, and connection systems, distribution and control systems, and aftermarket services.

Subsea 7 will provide subsea pipelines for the gas project. The company will provide concept and design, as well as EPCI of the tieback to the Juniper platform through flowlines and a manifold gathering system. The contract also requires the company to handle topside upgrades.

Trinidad and Tobago-based energy services provider Massy Wood was chosen to provide upgrade services for the topsides.

Aker Solutions, a provider of integrated solutions and services for the energy industry, was contracted to provide FEED for the platform for the Cypre field development in December 2019.
