Notably, the number of shale-related patent applications in the oil & gas industry was 352 in Q3 2024, versus 713 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 28% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that China Petrochemical filed the most shale patents within the oil & gas industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 32 shale-related patents in the quarter, compared with 84 in the previous quarter. It was followed by China National Petroleum with 21 shale patent filings, Fuji Oil (19 filings), and CNPC Capital (13 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 44% share of total patent filings
The largest share of shale related patent filings in the oil & gas industry in Q3 2024 was in China with 44%, followed by the US (29%) and Argentina (1%). The share represented by China was 31% lower than the 75% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
