OMV (Norge), a subsidiary of Austrian energy company OMV, and its partners have made an oil discovery in production licence 817 (PL 817) in the Norwegian North Sea, through the drilling of wildcat well 15/2-2 S.

The well is located about 5km west of the Equinor-operated Gudrun field, and about 230km west of Stavanger.

Following drilling to a vertical depth of 4,723m below sea level using the Odfjell Drilling-owned Deepsea Yantai drilling facility, the well 15/2-2 S intersected an oil column with a thickness of 500m in the intra-Draupne Formation.

The oil column consisted of various thin sandstone layers totalling 23m with poor reservoir characteristics, as per the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD).

Oil samples were collected from two different sand layers whose pressure regimes were not the same. Oil shows were also registered across the entire interval in the Upper Jurassic.

As per the preliminary estimate, the discovery holds 0.95–5.55 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalent. This is due to the limited thickness of the sandstone layers and uncertainty in their dispersion.

OMV and other licensees of PL 817 plan to assess the well result to determine the volume potential in various reservoir zones. The companies will also evaluate the discovery along with other prospects in the production licence.

OMV (Norge) operates the PL 817 with a 50% stake while other partners include Neptune Energy Norge (30%) and Source Energy (20%).

The Well 15/2-2 S, the first exploration well in PL 817, which was awarded in APA 2015, was not formation-tested. However, data acquisition and sampling were carried out.

According to NPD, the wildcat well will be now plugged permanently and abandoned.
