Adnoc Drilling Company, a unit of Adnoc Group, has signed a $252m agreement to purchase ten newbuild hybrid power land drilling rigs.
The newbuild hybrid power rigs, which feature the Fast Desert Moving design with capabilities to work in cluster wells, will be developed by China Petroleum Technology and Development Corporation in China.
Adnoc Drilling said it will use hybrid power solutions to meet its decarbonisation strategy to contribute to Adnoc Group’s aim of reducing its greenhouse gas intensity by 25% by 2030, and achieve the UAE 2050 net-zero target.
The purchase is expected to contribute to the firm’s effort to boost its onshore capacity and contribute to Adnoc Group’s accelerated production target.
The rigs will feature high-capacity battery and engine automation, in addition to its traditional diesel generators.
The hybrid power technology system is designed to store energy in its batteries to reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions from the rig by 10% to 15%.

By GlobalDataEach of the rigs will allow connection to the electrical grid with minimal adjustment. This would depend on the location of the rig and the grid power availability.
Adnoc Drilling CEO Abdulrahman Abdullah Al Seiari said: “This is yet another exciting step for Adnoc Drilling, these new rigs contribute to the capacity required to meet our customers’ expectations of maximum energy with minimal emissions.”
Adnoc Drilling said the new rigs will enter the fleet from the fourth quarter of 2023.
In a press statement, Adnoc Drilling said: “They are the first new land rigs acquired as part of updated guidance, which will see a peak-owned rig count of 142 by the end of 2024, which compares to IPO guidance of 127 rigs by the end of 2030.”
Furthermore, Adnoc Drilling plans to lease four additional land rigs.
In October 2022, Adnoc Drilling was selected by Adnoc to provide 12 jack-up rigs, two island rigs, and associated Integrated Drilling Services (IDS) for the expansion of offshore operations.
