Italian firm Eni and Algerian state-owned oil company Sonatrach have started production from the HDLE/HDLS oil field in the Algerian desert.
Located in the Zemlet el Arbi concession in the Berkine North basin, the field has been commissioned six months after its discovery in March 2022.
The HDLE/HDLS field currently has a production capacity of 10,000 barrels of oil per day.
The companies plan to boost production from the field through an accelerated development plan, which will involve drilling new wells in 2023.
In a press statement, Eni said: “This achievement, reached in partnership with Sonatrach and in cooperation with the local authorities, was made possible by Eni’s distinctive upstream business model, based on the parallelisation of project activities.”
Eni recently commissioned two gas fields in Algeria to meet the surging gas demand in Europe.

By GlobalDataThe two fields are related to the Berkine Sud contract that was signed last year between Sonatrach and Eni.
By the end of this year, the production capacity of the two fields is anticipated to reach two million cubic metres.
Eni expects the HDLE/HDLS fast-track development project, together with the Berkine South fields, to contribute to its target to exceed 120,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of equity production capacity in 2023 in Algeria.
Earlier this year, Eni agreed to acquire BP’s upstream business in Algeria, including stakes in two gas-producing concessions to strengthen its presence in the country.
