GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Refinery Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units (FCCU) Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units‘, says that Asia’s refinery FCCU capacity increased from 3,219 thousand barrels per day (mbd) in 2016 to 3,551mbd in 2021 at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 2.0%. It is expected to increase from 3,551mbd in 2021 to 4,493mbd in 2026 at an AAGR of 4.7%.
China, India, Japan, the Philippines and South Korea are the key countries in Asia that accounted for 97.8% of the total FCCU capacity of the region in 2021.
China had the highest refinery FCCU capacity in 2021 with 1,765mbd. Other key countries, in terms of refinery FCCU capacity, were India, Japan, the Philippines and South Korea with 938mbd, 647mbd, 67mbd and 56mbd, respectively. China witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2016-2021 with an AAGR of 3.3% among the countries, followed by India with 1.5%.
In Asia, eight countries had active refineries with a total FCCU capacity of 3,551mbd in 2021. Jamnagar II (India), Jamnagar I (India), Huizhou I (China), Kawasaki (Japan) and Zhanjiang III (China) were some of the largest active refineries in terms of FCCU capacity in 2021.
By 2026, upcoming FCCUs are expected to commence operations in 16 refineries across Asia. Vadinar (India), Yulong (China) and Gulei (China) are the major refineries with upcoming FCCU projects in Asia during the 2022-2026 outlook period.
