GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Global Refinery Hydrocracking Units Outlook to 2026 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Hydrocracking Units’, says that the Asia refinery hydrocracking units capacity increased from 3,346 thousand barrels of oil per day (mbd) in 2016 to 4,160mbd in 2021 at an Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 4.4%. It is expected to increase from 4,160mbd in 2021 to 6,176mbd in 2026, at an AAGR of 7.9%.

China, India, South Korea, Japan and Thailand are the key countries in Asia that accounted for more than 90.5% of the total hydrocracking units capacity of the region in 2021.

China had the highest refinery hydrocracking units capacity in 2021, with 2,428mbd. Other key countries in terms of refinery hydrocracking units capacity were India, South Korea, Japan and Thailand with 632mbd, 402mbd, 170mbd and 131mbd, respectively. China witnessed the highest capacity growth during 2016 to 2021, with an AAGR of 6.8%, among the countries followed by South Korea, with 1.9%.

Asia; refinery hydrocracking

In Asia, 11 countries had active refineries, with a total refinery hydrocracking units capacity of 4,160mbd in 2021. Dalian III (China), Yeosu (South Korea), Huizhou I (China), Dayushan Island (China) and Qingdao (China) were some of the largest active refineries in terms of hydrocracking units capacity in 2021.

By 2026, upcoming hydrocracking units are expected to commence operations in 29 refineries across Asia. Lianyungang I (China), Sriracha I (Thailand) and Vadinar (India) are the major refineries with upcoming hydrocracking projects in Asia during the 2022 to 2026 outlook period.
