Netherlands-based Fugro has deployed multi-purpose offshore vessel Fugro Gauss to join the Fugro Brasilis in offshore Mexico to help complete seep-hunting survey for TGS.

The survey is being conducted as part of TGS’s multiclient ‘Gigante Survey’, which also includes a regional 2D seismic survey of around 186,000km gravity and magnetic data and a regional seismic structural interpretation.

Fugro’s seep-hunting survey is planned to cover an area of 625,000km².

Both vessels will map the deepwaters of Mexico using hull-mounted multibeam echosounders and sub-bottom profiler systems.

Using the data acquired, sites where deep hydrocarbon-rich fluids escaping to the seafloor can be identified.

The data can also be used to target hundreds of sites for coring and geochemical analysis.

Fugro seep studies global product line manager Jim Gharib said: "Fugro has a dedicated centre of excellence in Houston for seep-hunting.

"The team includes several of the world’s leading geoscience experts responsible for bringing seep-hunting to the offshore industry."

TGS survey has been designed to assist exploration and production companies in their evaluation of prospectivity offshore Mexico during upcoming licence rounds.

Recently, Fugro deployed its Q1400 trenchers at three North Sea oil and gas projects for Wintershall, Det norske and Bibby Offshore.
